Largest turbot aquaculture unit of Europe

Within the scope of the reinforcement works of the pumping mains of the fish farm of Mira, in the midst of Costa de Prata, 80 km south of Porto, in Portugal, SPT has supplied twenty workers since the start of November.

The workers allocated by the company are collaborating in the cleaning works of the tanks used for the fattening of the turbot. For this task, with an expected duration of 30 days, SPT has resorted to local recruitment.

An Iberian consortium, comprising reference companies, is in charge of the project.

About the Turbot Fattening Aquaculture Unit in Mira
The Turbot Fattening Aquaculture Unit in Mira is the largest of its kind in the whole of Europe. It involved an investment of 206 million euros, which includes 2,500 pools (which may be extended to 3,500), representing a population of 43 kilograms of fish per square metre, in an area of 86 hectares.
It is located 500 metres from the dune line and will operate with three mains that pump 30 metres cubic per second of sea water, three kilometres from the coast, and send it to the unit. After being used in the various tanks, the water is treated for organic waste and then sent back to sea.
The complex also includes a treatment and packaging plant, offices, fresh water tanks, oxygen tanks and organic containers for receiving dead animals.
In full operation, this unit enables the creation of 350 direct jobs and about 600 indirect jobs.
